Alaskans often deride the place as Los Anchorage, but the occasional moose ambling down a bike trail hints at nearby wilderness. In An Alaska Anthology, twenty-five contemporary scholars explore the region’s pivotal events, significant themes, and major players, Native, Russian, Canadian, and American. The essays chosen for this anthology represent the very best writing on Alaska, giving great depth to our understanding and appreciation of its history from the days of Russian-American Company domination to the more recent threat of nuclear testing by the Atomic Energy Commission and the influence of oil money on inexperienced politicians. Readers may be familiar with an earlier anthology, Interpreting Alaska’s History, from which the present volume evolved to accommodate an explosion of research in the past decade.

Veteran Christian romance novelist Coble sets her latest story in Alaska, where protagonist Haley Walsh goes to take still photographs for a celebrity nature documentarian’s foray into bear country. There Haley faces painful childhood memories of her sister’s death and her parents’ rejection. As bear biologist Tank Lassiter leads photographer Nowak’s team through the wild, he and Haley quickly forge a strong connection that each tries to fight for fear of getting hurt.
The history of Alaska is filled with stories of new land and new riches — and ever present are new people with competing views over how the valuable resources should be used: Russians exploiting a fur empire; explorers checking rival advances; prospectors stampeding to the clarion call of “Gold!”; soldiers battling out a decisive chapter in world war; oil wildcatters looking for a different kind of mineral wealth; and always at the core of these disputes is the question of how the land is to be used and by whom. While some want Alaska to remain static, others are in the vanguard of change.
Explorer’s Guide The Alaska Panhandle covers the basics for lodging, restaurants, shopping, and recreational activities in this untamed paradise. It tells you how to get around in this distinctive 1000-mile region where there are no roads between towns. Cruise passengers will find a section on port highlights and things to do away from the crowds, as well as tips for observing wildlife, and a rundown on cruise lines that visit the Panhandle each summer. Another chapter focuses on Alaska Natives, especially the Tlingits, and their intriguing totem pole art. Another section takes travelers into the Yukon along the Chilkoot Trail on the paths blazed in the Klondike Gold Rush.

In the immense, road less expanse of the Far North, storytelling has thrived for many generations. This anthology captures some of these stories as told by rural Alaskans. This volume is a sequel to Authentic Alaska. The majority of writers whose work appears here have lived in rural Alaska for many years. This anthology offers glimpses of regular people meeting life’s everyday challenges while experiencing the same struggles, joys, and idiosyncrasies that humans face everywhere; adolescents coming of age, struggles with addiction, regional idiom, and cross-cultural challenges..

In a sequel to “Alaska’s Bear Tales,” Larry Kaniut offers more true stories of encounters between bears and humans that are action-packed and compelling.

Morgan offers an authentic and deliciously humorous account of the prostitutes and other “disreputable” women who were the earliest female pioneers of the Far North. At the turn of the century, tens of thousands of Americans left their homes, escaping a worldwide depression & the restraints of the Victorian Era, to stampede to Alaska & the Yukon, where millions of dollars in gold was being discovered in remote, subartic mining camps. Women accompanied the men on the long journey to the Far North–more often prostitutes, dance hall girls & entertainers than respectful wives & schoolteachers.

He becomes a trapper, bush pilot, fisherman, guide, wolf hunter, poet, environmentalist, and finally a reluctant politician who endears himself to Alaska’s people by telling them the unvarnished and sometimes unwelcome truth about the state of affairs in their oil-boom state. They punish him by electing him governor!

Easy-to-read text with bright, full color photographs brings Alaska to young students. Presented in a simple, easily understandable, “scrapbook” format, kids will truly enjoy opening this travelogue-like book. This 48-page book is filled with current state facts and statistical data. Important historical information segues to up-to-date details on cities, economics, geography, and climate.
